Summit Animal Rescue Association (SARA)

volunteer animal rescue

Summit Animal Rescue Association (SARA, Inc.) is a non-profit organization with locations in Central New Jersey. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, so your donations are tax-deductible.

Our mission is to rescue cats in need, provide them with medical attention, rehabilitate them, and provide a temporary loving environment until we find
a permanent home through adoption. In addition, we have hands-on volunteers who
help N.J. residents to locate low cost spay and neuter options for feral cats to help reduce the number of unwanted kittens in shelters.

SARA has a proven track record for saving lives. Through our tireless efforts we have found homes for over hundreds of animals per year since we began in 2002. Our entire staff is made up of volunteers; we work with veterinarians who give us discounted rates and we do not spend any money on advertising, so 100% of all donations go directly to the care and feeding of the animals we save. If you would like to see some of the cats we are offering for adoption, visit our adoptions page or go to www.sararescue.petfinder.com.

Volunteers are always needed and are very welcome not only during our Pet Adoption Days on Saturdays, but also in the daily care of the cats and kittens being housed at PetSmart in Watchung, NJ. We have frequent off-site events and fundraisers throughout the year that can always benefit by an extra, animal-loving hand.

Success Stories

Nestle.png

Nestle

Nestle lived in Oregon with her loving owner, an elderly woman. Due to illness moving was a must. Once at the new location, the owner was forced to give up Nestle due to allergies. She was devastated! Nestle was sad at first in her new foster home but adjusted quickly. After a few months, an inquiry was made by Michelle from Pennsylvania. Michelle traveled 3 hours to visit Nestle and fell in love! Today Nestle lives in a beautiful home with Michelle, Sheldon and Daisy where she is spoiled rotten! She spends her days kneading, purring, lounging with Daisy, watching birds and loving the loads of love and affection her new family gives her!

Pebbles & Bam Bam

Pebbles and BamBam were born in a hoarders home, a litter of four. The hoarder paid no attention to the kittens as mamma was present to care for the babies. However, one day when the babies were just four weeks old, the hoarder came home to find two of the four dead. The other two were very sick with an upper respiratory infection. BamBam was so sick that his one eye had ruptured and he had severe infection in the other eye. SARA rescued the remaining two kittens. They were not able to eat from a bottle and had to be syringe fed around the clock for three days. At that point the medicine and constant feedings paid off and they started eating on their own.

Nine weeks later they are very healthy and ready to be adopted. Although BamBam is totally blind, he will be adopted with his sister to a wonderful home that is ready to take on a special needs kitten.

Zeus

Five years ago, I came home from North Carolina one Thanksgiving and there he was on my back deck. I opened the door and he walked in like he had always lived here. He was malnourished and his fur was in need of a major grooming. We had the vet check him over and other than having three teeth pulled, he was given a clean bill of health and updated on his vaccinations. We listed him on Petfinder and 3 months later his new Mommy Elizabeth drove up to Old Bridge from Philadelphia to meet Zeus. She fell head over heels in love and Zeus has been a king in his new castle ever since!

Our own volunteer, Karyn Sochacki, has written a wonderful book!

What's Wrong With A Black Cat? is a colorful and delightful children's picture book, and a wonderful adventure story that teaches young readers not only about love for animals, but also valuable truths about the importance of internal character versus the superficiality of external beauty.

Foster Homes

Being a foster home is a fantastic experience. Foster homes are always needed to work with cats and kittens, for long and short-term periods, depending on the needs of the animal and the time it takes to socialize them into adoptable pets. If you would like to foster a cat, contact the adoption coordinator in your area.

Make a Donation

We must be able to pay all of our veterinary expenses for the animals we help. Checks can be made payable to S.A.R.A., Inc. and you can mail them to S.A.R.A., Inc., P.O. Box 124, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922.

Leaving a Lasting Gift

Please consider a bequest in your Will or Trust Agreement that would enable S.A.R.A., Inc. to continue their work in the rescue and rehabilitation of those who cannot fend for themselves.

Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program

Why not improve your overall well being by adopting one of our Senior Companions?

Research shows that companion animals can improve health and happiness for all people regardless of age, health, social or economic status. Senior pets make wonderful companions for many reasons. They protect you from boredom and loneliness. They are calmer and make you feel more secure at home. Generally, pet owners get more exercise and outdoor activity. (50% off adoption fee for Seniors!)

Grover

FIV+ "Fabulous, Illuminating
& Vibrant"

He was just wandering the streets in Newark, no idea where he came from. Seems like he MIGHT be more fond of men, but does really well with ladies, too. Just happier without other cats. He is a little stressed out with too many other cats around in foster care. Quite appreciative of pets and rubs and happily bestows affection.

He LOVES to play! He doesn't get enough active play time in foster care, so he's looking forward to chasing some things! Loves catnip. Can often be found napping inside a carrier with a little beddy in it, and a dose of catnip.

He has FIV, which suppresses his immune system. So far the only issue he's had with that is that he got stomatitis—inflamed gums— which made it very painful to eat. He's now had extensive dental work to remove most of his teeth, which solves the issue quite well. Annnnnd he eats a LOT now so we know it worked.

And otherwise his blood work looks good and he's fully vaccinated and neutered.

Serious inquiries only please.

For more info please email saracats.julia@gmail.com

Grover will be a wonderful companion to anyone who would like a little gentleman by their side!

Papa Bear

FIV+ "Friendly, Incredible
& Velvety"

Papa Bear is one of a kind. A real talker, a big handsome face, big meaty head, ridiculously outgoing and friendly, not a self-conscious bone in his body.

He was found in Orange NJ on a block that had literally dozens of unneutered cats with access to only meager food at a couple of houses. We got the information that he had been kicked out of a house on that block and then left behind when the people moved.

Papa was the only cat known by everyone, and notorious on the block. Partly because of his big big personality, fearless friendliness and big talk, but also because he fathered a large number of babies on both sides of the street.

It got to the point that he couldn't keep up with child support payments, and he turned himself in. He's ready to settle down and just be the king of a nice cozy home.Very beautiful markings, plush shiny coat. A nice big boy.

He hasn't had access to all the amenities in foster care, so we can only imagine how he will relish his soft pillows and cat trees. He is really ready to stretch his legs and move right in. Sadly he is in a large cage because there is no other foster home or room for him.

Serious inquiries only please. Papa is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and ready for a real home.

For more info please email dapsanimals@gmail.com

Papa Bear would be wonderful companion to anyone who would like a little Sweetheart by their side!

Panda

FIV+ "Faithful, Impressive
& Valuable"

Someone rescued this sweet boy from outside and when they found out he was fiv positive, Panda was put in a small crate to live. Panda's story is heartbreaking...he lived in this crate for years without any love...when the owner had to go to the hospital it was discovered pandas horrible living situation. He was removed from the home and now lives at a vet practice where he is loved. Panda is cat friendly and full of love.

Please consider giving this guy a real home!

If so, please contact saracats.julia@gmail.com

Panda would be wonderful companion to anyone who would like a little Sweetheart by their side!

NOTE: Adopters must be at least 55 or older. All cats are spayed, neutered, and vaccinated.

Dianes BC.jpg

Looking for barn homes or warehouse home for pair of FERAL kitties.

These guys are All vetted!

Neutered, tested negative for fiv felv, up to date on shots, and microchipped.

Do you need some good barn kitties to keep away rodents?

These two are looking for that job!
Of course they need cat food daily and proper shelter
(we can help you with that!) as they do not eat the rodents.

They are healthy, but lost their outdoor home due to their feeder’s passing.
They have been stuck inside for over 1 yr and they would love to be outside again.
They are feral. So, they are not happy inside, nor do they make good house pets.

Male orange is 3 yrs
Female tortie is 2yrs

Will transport a few hours! Help us help these kitties!
email Dapsanimals@gmail.com

Thank you!!
